Intramuscular Delivery

MedPulser® DNA Delivery System

Inovio's MedPulser® DNA Delivery System, consisting of a pulse generator and needle electrode applicator, was designed to create optimal conditions to deliver DNA into muscle cells for immunization. The vaccine is first injected with a syringe/needle into selected muscle tissue, usually the deltoid muscle that is used for conventional flu vaccines. Using a remote control, the pulse generator is switched on. Low-voltage electrical pulses are generated and delivered through an attached electrical cord into the injected tissue through an electrode-needle array on the applicator. The electrode-needle array consists of a four-needle-electrode. The needle-electrode array is removable and disposable to reduce costs. The arrays are available in different sizes, using different voltage pulses from the generator to create the optimal field strength.

Output characteristics: 50-250V/cm, 60ms

Elgen® DNA Delivery System

The Elgen® DNA Delivery System is a newer generation of electroporation systems developed by Inovio. The system consists of a pulse generator and needle-electrode applicator that incorporates two syringes/needles. With the pressing of a button on the integrated applicator, the two needles are inserted into selected muscle or skin, the DNA vaccine is injected, and electrical pulses are applied. Low-voltage electrical pulses are generated by the pulse generator and delivered through an attached electrical cord into the same selected tissue through the electrode-needle pair on the applicator, effectively co-localizing the DNA and the porating electric field.

Output characteristics: 50-250V/cm, 10-60ms

CELLECTRA® DNA Delivery System

The CELLECTRA® electroporation device was designed to deliver DNA vaccines intramuscularly and intradermally. This device measures tissue resistance and adapts electrical output to varying individual conditions, such as fat content in the muscle, skin thickness, or changing tissue resistance during the electroporation process. By sensing the tissue micro-environment and adapting an applied, constant-current electric field strength in real-time, this technology optimizes DNA uptake and results in uniform expression of the target protein with minimal tissue damage. The device is portable, water-resistant, shock-proof, battery operated, and software driven, making it particularly suited for usage in the field and for veterinary applications.

Output characteristics: 40-200 Volts/cm, 52 msec
Current Range: 0.1-1.0 amps; optimal: 0.5 amps (intramuscular)
